It may take a while before people start hanging out and leaving comments here... if that ever happens
ReplyDeletewe have to be optimistic !
Deletethe sheer length of the series is intimidating for most, i think.. also the fact that generally people don't really know the history behind it and the plot of the romance of the three kingdoms. in western society, it's a really obscure book.
ReplyDeletewhen i started reading it i had no idea who luu buu, zhao yun, liu bei and diaochan were. when the big reveals happened, i knew of course that it was important and that it meant something, but not much else. i found that quite entertaining, learning about this big story, but most people i recommended the series to gave up early on.
Another thing is that there are soo many characters and factions, and again i love those kind of convoluted/complex narrative in the style of GoT, but even then i had to make lists of names and write down where they fit in the story to remember them all in the beginning.. i think most people just aren't willing to put that much effort into a series. which, i mean, who could blame them?
That's true, many quitters tend to quit early (due to the reasons you've mentioned, and pettier excuses as well). I think though that the dropout rate can be mitigated if only there were more people willing to talk to one other about the confusing things, like what fans of other series do.
DeleteAt any rate, Ravages being long and convoluted (not to mention the non-weekly release schedule) would wear down readers not determined enough to sift through the schemes and the themes... In terms of complexity, I'm not sure if Game of Thrones can match Ravages (though the books, which I have yet to read, may be able to)
